Endorsements

PARENT ENDORSED:

FairGradeOn November 3rd, Fairfax County voters in the Providence District will vote to fill a vacant seat on the FCPS School Board. Therefore, FAIRGRADE's leadership team is announcing its endorsement of PATTY REED for this open seat.

As you saw last year with the grading policy deliberations, every seat on the School Board is important to parents when it concerns county-wide issues. Our endorsement was based on the candidate's web sites and other publicly available information.

PATTY REED was an early and active FAIRGRADE volunteer. As such, improving School Board relations with parents, teachers and the public is a cornerstone of her campaign for School Board. If  elected, PATTY REED will focus on protecting class sizes, getting kids and teachers out of trailers and asking tough questions about spending priorities for our schools. For the next few years, the School Board will be faced with unusually tough choices. Given the likelihood of painful budget cuts, it is more important than ever that School Board members work closely with the community.

PATTY REED has a longstanding record of involvement in many community groups ranging from the Girl Scouts to Vienna Youth Soccer to Friends of Oakton Library. In addition, she has volunteered in her children's schools as a tutor and teacher's aide. She also possesses 20 years of consulting experience managing contracts and budgets, which includes experience with public/private partnerships.

The FAIRGRADE leadership team believes that PATTY REED will do the best job of all the Providence District candidates for the School Board in consulting frequently with a wide range of parents, teachers and stakeholders. Please give FAIRGRADE member PATTY REED your support by voting for her on Nov. 3rd.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Reed Receives FairfaxCAPS Leadership Team Endorsement
Parent Advocates Believe She’s the Best Candidate for School Board

Oakton, VA - October 27, 2009 – Patricia S. “Patty” Reed, Providence District School Board candidate, announced today the leaders of a second, highly respected parent advocacy group – FairfaxCAPS-, also known as the Fairfax Coalition of Advocates for Public Schools, have endorsed Reed’s candidacy for Fairfax County School Board.

Reed said the endorsement demonstrates that parent leaders, who know FCPS and FCPS officials best, believe Reed best embraces the philosophy of respecting parent input for School Board decisions.

“The leaders of FairfaxCAPS, like the leaders of FAIRGRADE who recently endorsed me, are respected countywide for their knowledge and professionalism. The media and members of the Fairfax County
Board of Supervisors regularly contact these parent leaders for their research as well as parent and taxpayer perspectives on issues like the budget and the recent Gatehouse II proposal. Most importantly, the leaders of these parent groups have built impressive organizations that are supported by thousands of parents. I’m grateful for their public support.”

FairfaxCAPS spokesperson Kim Farrell said the group’s leadership team recognizes Reed’s commitment to improving School Board relations. “Patty Reed has a longstanding record of involvement in
many community groups ranging from Girl Scouts to Vienna Youth Soccer to Friends of Oakton Library. Reed has been an active classroom volunteer and teacher’s aide and possesses 20 years experience managing contracts and budgets. We feel Patty Reed will do the best job of all the Providence District candidates for the School Board in consulting frequently with a wide range of parents, teachers and stakeholders,” said Farrell.

Reed said parents recognize her dedication to the School Board if she’s elected. “Providence District residents know I will be a full-time School Board member. Just last night at a School Board candidate forum, my opponent John Jennison refused to commit to not running for the Board of Supervisors in two years. I told the audience I would serve as long as voters would have me because the issues facing our students, parents, teachers and families are very serious and need full-time engagement,” said Reed.

TEACHER SUPPORTED

"What I find refreshing about Patty is her deep concern for other’s views and her desire to get as much information as possible before making decisions.  She truly cares about representing the interests and addressing the needs of all in our school system.  Patty’s wealth of experience in the classroom provides her with a unique perspective as to how to better support our students and teachers.   Patty knows how to ‘think out of the box’ to find solutions, and she is not distracted by politics or the status quo.  My experiences with her personally have been wonderful, as she is always approachable and willing to assist.  As an educator I am convinced she would make an excellent School Board member and leader …”

COMMUNITY SUPPORTED

Fellow Fairfaxers:

As President of our Library support group, Patty Reed regularly shows how good listening and solid organization bring out the best in people. Everyone's ideas are considered; the meetings start on time and clarify goals and assignments; and our energy and results feed on themselves for the good of the Oakton Library and the wider community. A vote for Patty on November 3rd is a vote to put her integrity and skills to work for Fairfax parents, students and teachers.
